Description

Emcozin 30 mg/500 mg tablets are a type of co-codamol — a combination painkiller containing:

  • Codeine phosphate hemihydrate 30 mg (an opioid analgesic)

  • Paracetamol 500 mg (a non-opioid pain reliever and fever reducer)

This combination is used to treat moderate pain when other simple painkillers (like paracetamol or ibuprofen on their own) are not effective enough.

  • Paracetamol reduces pain and lowers fever by acting on the central nervous system, likely by blocking pain-signalling chemicals.

  • Codeine is a weak opioid that works in the brain and spinal cord to further reduce pain by acting on opioid receptors. Codeine’s pain-relieving effect in part comes from its conversion into morphine within the body.

Combined, the two ingredients offer stronger pain relief than either ingredient alone.

What it’s used for

This combination is typically prescribed (or recommended by a doctor) for short-term relief of moderate pain that hasn’t responded to other painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen alone.

Common examples include:

  • Dental pain

  • Musculoskeletal pain

  • Pain after surgery or injury (as advised by a healthcare provider)
